Relaxation massage should never be underestimated as a good and affective tool to help with one's mind and body.
Relaxation massage is often referred to as Swedish massage is referring to the techniques which are about reduction of Physical and Psychological changes for the client such as:
Physical changes:
-The mind slows down and research has shown a change in brain wave types.
-Breathing rate slows down, which activates a reduction in the metabolic rate which activates a deep rest for the body.
-When metabolic rate reduces, it also reduces the heart rate, which reduces blood pressure and increases circulation. This also changes the endocrine system to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces anxiety.
-above changes then cause blood vessel dilation which increases oxygenation to all cells of the body which helps with healing of the body.
-Pain can be reduced by increase of beneficial hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain. Which leads to:
Psychological changes:
-A feeling of peace and calm is activated.
-A sense of being "In control of one's life".
-A feeling of being positive.
-A reduction of worry and anxiety levels.
-Able to think clearly.
-More laughter and good humor which activates feeling of being happier.
-Improved concentration and memory.
-Improved creativity and intuition.
-Improved relationships as one becomes more approachable and a warmer person.
-Restful sleep.
Therefore, when one goes to have a massage, expecting hard and extremely firm massage straight away this can prevent the relaxation response in the body and reduce the Therapists ability to help you the most.
Good Therapists will try and educate their clients to help them understand. However, if their client is not interested in listening this can be a difficult message to communicate, as they've always expected hard pressure straight up. So if your Therapist is starting with less pressure first, just ask if they are trying to relax your body first?
