It’s great when I get a question as I always know others need to know also. Therefore, I decided to share when a client asked me to explain “what is Oncology massage all about?”
Oncology Massage is a massage that is aimed for those that are " in a fragile health state" due to Cancer and or other ongoing health conditions. Oncology massage is a massage that activates deep relaxation. The massage through a lovely rhythmic touch, is aimed at reducing fatigue, nausea and pain. Probably the best way to explain the benefits of Oncology massage is by discussing a case study:
A client I have been helping for the last 9 months, came to me with chronic pain and on a walking stick around 6 months post a Stroke. She was in a "fragile health state" as she had no energy and had lost her confidence with all activities of daily living. Despite how she felt, this client came to me stating that "she needed a hard deep tissue massage".
Post evaluation and new client intake form review I discussed with my client that it would be of valuable to try an Oncology massage and then we would review after her massage. She was skeptical yet trusted my judgment as other massages had left her feeling unwell and had not changed this ongoing level of fatigue.
Immediately after the first massage she reported feeling like she was floating. A couple days later she was surprised that she was pain free for 24 hours. Even though it was short lived that time allowed her to have a really good night’s sleep. The first for many months. A month later she had her second massage, and she reported a couple days pain free. This client stated each month she improved. Now some 9 months later, she is off her walking stick, has returned to work. She is not pain free, but the pain has greatly reduced allowing to have an improved quality of life.
For the client this relief is certainly valuable and for the therapist very satisfying.
